Seventh
graders take a stroll through history
Members of the seventh grade Talented and Gifted
(TAG) program had the rare opportunity to get close to our
area's past on a special field trip Wednesday, Oct. 14. The
group toured the Little Red School House, Old Fort Johnson, the
Montgomery County Archives, and the Fonda Cemetery.
The outing was part of a social studies lesson
teaching the use of primary resources and artifacts to recreate
history. By taking students to the local sites and allowing them
to literally hold a little history in their hands helps make the
past come alive.
"Like an archeologist, the students will examine
places and items that make up local history," said teacher Holly
Thompson, "They will then write an essay detailing what they
imagine it was like to live in that era"
Teacher Steve Vunk, Fonda-Fultonville senior and
Fultonville historian Ryan Weitz, and retired teacher John
Thompson joined the group to share their experience studying the
community's history.
